History and Landscape
The Argentario, one of the most beautiful and attractive areas for visitors in Tuscany, now lends its name to a DOC white wine. The wine is Ansonica, and it has long been produced on the Argentario promontory and hills, and on the isle of Giglio. It's an attractive itinerary that takes us through hills and along the coast dotted with ancient villages and historic memories. On one side is Capalbio with is Medieval buildings and ruins dating from the Etruscan and Roman eras, and on the other is Ansedonia, a modern town built near what was once an ancient Roman settlement. Then Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole, with the imposing Medieval fortress on the Argentario promontory, and the untamed beauty of the isle of Giglio. It is mainly here that grape production has maintained the typical terrace system, where growing the vines is difficult, but the produce obtained in the end is excellent. In recent years the cultivation of these vines has been extended to the hills and the hillsides along the coast, and the quality of the local wine has risen so much as to earn the DOC designation.
Area of Production
Ansonica Costa dell'Argentario wine must be made on the hills, hillsides and insular parts of the area south of the Grosseto province, which includes parts of the territories of Manciano, Orbetello and Capalbio and all the lands of the isle of Giglio and Monte Argentario.
The Grapes
The basic grape is the Ansonica Bianco (at least 85%), and other recommended and/or authorised white grapes may be added up to a maximum of 15%. The environmental and growing conditions of the vineyards, growing practices, and pruning methods must be faithful to the traditions of the area. Both forced crops and pergola?type vineyards are prohibited. The maximum allowed grape yield per hectare is 110 quintals (24,249 lbs.).
Organoleptic Characteristics
The colour is straw yellow, more or less deep; the fragrance is slightly fruited; the taste is dry, soft, lively and harmonic. Minimum alcohol content 11.5°.
Food Matches
As a fresh and lively wine, Ansonica Costa dell'Argentario is ideal with light seafood dishes, especially hors d'oeuvres and fish. It is also an excellent aperitif.
