|
| Defined as
"a modern wine with ancient tradition", this white Val d'Arbia
is considered the original Chianti "white". In fact, the DOC
zone is the same as that of Chianti Classico, as well as Chianti
from Siena. Val d'Arbia is the name of a wine and also a location,
historically rich for, among other things, the site where in
1260 a battle fought between the Ghibellini of Siena and the
Guelfi of Florence was so bloody that the Arbia river ran red!
Here, today it is instead the scene of modern winemaking, where
producers are busy interpreting their own personalised wines.
While some producers remain faithful to the traditional varieties,
others are experimenting with new blends including more noble
grapes. |

|
This is a vast territory, non?homogeneous
in its soil and microclimates. It includes the communities
of Siena, Castellina in Chianti, Radda in Chianti, Gaiole
in Chianti, Monteriggioni, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Sovicille,
Asciano, Monteroni d'Arbia, Murlo and Buonconvento.

|
|
| Val d'Arbia:
70?90% of Trebbiano toscano and Malvasia del Chianti; 10?30%
of Chardonnay; up to 15% of other complementary white grapes,
excluding aromatic types. The maximum yield per hectare is 110
quintals (24,250 lbs.). There is also a Vin Santo Val d'Arbia
produced here (sweet, off?dry and dry), which is made with the
same grapes, following the traditional methods and aged for
3 years in small barrels. |

Organoleptic Characteristics |
|
| The Val d'Arbia
wine has a light straw colour with greenish hues; the bouquet
is delicate, fine, fruity; the flavour is dry, fresh and balanced.
Minimum alcohol: 10.5°. Vin Santo: the colour varies from light
straw colour to pale or deep amber; the bouquet is intense and
ethereal, typical; the flavour from dry to softly sweet, smooth,
with a typical bitter nuance. Min. alcohol: 17°. |
|
|
| As a fresh
and crispy wine, Val d'Arbia is ideal as an aperitif. It also
goes well with soups and vegetables, fish and white meat dishes.
The off?dry Vin Santo is a perfect match for dry pastry from
Siena, while the drier Vin Santo is really a wine of meditation.
