History and Landscape
Morellino di Scansano is one of the most famous Tuscan red wines and the most typical of the Maremma area. This wine originated in an environment which is ideal for grape growing: sloping hillsides gently cooled off by sea breezes. In this land where the Etruscans cultivated the vines, the Spanish planted their Alicante grapes in the 1600s, which blended with the traditional Tuscan varieties and gave birth to a wine of great prestige. In books dating back to the last century we read descriptions such as the following: "the wines of Magliano, Pereta and Scansano are excellent and only in few areas is such an exquisite wine produced". It was also reported that the wine of Scansano "greatly resembles Chianti wine". In fact, the similarity to Chianti and also Brunello di Montalcino conditioned the Maremma viticulturists for a long time. Today, however, Morellino di Scansano has asserted its own identity through more severe productive control, and is also recognised abroad as a high?quality wine.
Area of Production

Morellino di Scansano is produced in the hilly area of the province of Grosseto, between the Ombrone and Albegna rivers. It includes the entire community of Scansano, and part of Manciano, Magliano in Toscana, Grosseto, Campagnatico, Semproniano and Roccalbegna.

The Grapes
The base is Sangiovese, 85?100% (locally called Morellino, a derivation of the name of the local dark horse breed that is typical of this area). In addition, up to 15% of complementary red grapes are permitted, recommended specifically in the province of Grosseto. The yield per hectare is 120 quintals (26,455 lbs.).
Organoleptic Characteristics
Morellino di Scansano is of ruby red colour, tending towards garnet with age; the bouquet is vinous, with age it becomes nicely scented, ethereal, full, pleasant and fine; the flavour is dry, austere, warm, lightly tannic. Min. alcohol: 11.5°. This wine can be called Riserva if aged for two years starting from the 1st of January after harvest year ( including at least one year of ageing in wooden casks). Min. alcohol: 12°.
Food Matches
It is a wine to be enjoyed throughout the meal when young, if aged is perfect with roasts and game. It goes without saying that it is a perfect match to typical Maremma dishes.
