| Along with
Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG, other DOC wines are produced
in the territory of San Gimignano. The name San Gimignano includes
several types of wines: Rosso, Novello, Rosso Riserva, Rosato,
Vin Santo and Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice, plus the red and
rosé Sangiovese. The name was acknowledged only recently: in
August 1996. The professionalism of wine makers, the geological
characteristics and the climate make this area perfect for vine?growing.
Moreover, special attention is paid to the safeguard of the
environment and genuine produce. Many wine makers indeed take
part in special programs for the implementation of biological
farming techniques. Vine?growing is the most important and productive
sector of San Gimignano's economy, both as concern profit and
employment. The production of wine in San Gimignano is also
linked to the history and culture of this area, which contributes
to make the local produce one of the most sought?after Tuscan
wines. Since the old times the farmers of this area called the
local red wine "Vino Nero", and the name Vin Santo has been
known for ages. |
